The role of preservatives in the conjunctival toxicity of subconjunctival gentamicin injection.

چکیده
Subconjunctival gentamicin was identified as the cause of conjunctival chemosis and capillary closure in a recent study conducted in this department. The gentamicin preparation used in the study contained preservatives. The current prospective study was set up to investigate the role of preservatives in the conjunctival toxicity of subconjunctival gentamicin. Seventy five patients undergoing cataract surgery were enrolled in the study. They were split into three groups of 25 each. Group A patients were given a subconjunctival injection of a preservative-free aqueous solution of gentamicin at the end of the cataract procedure. Group B patients were given a subconjunctival injection of gentamicin containing sodium metabisulphite and disodium edetate as preservatives at the end of the cataract procedure. Group C was the control group where patients were not given any subconjunctival injection. The incidence of severity of conjunctival chemosis were observed in the three groups. The difference between groups A and B patients who received preservative-free gentamicin and gentamicin with preservatives respectively was significant (p < 0.02).

Randomised single blind trial to compare the toxicity of subconjunctival gentamicin and cefuroxime in cataract surgery.
Comparatively little attention has been paid to the conjunctival toxicity of antibiotics administered at the time of cataract surgery. We have observed the effect of subconjunctival gentamicin and cefuroxime injection, using colour photography in a randomised single blind trial of 121 patients undergoing routine cataract surgery. Our results suggest that a hyperaemic eye is likely to occur abou...

متن کاملProtective Effects of Co-Treatment With Hydroethanolic Extract of Origanum Vulgare on Gentamicin-Induced Renal Toxicity in Rats
Objective: Renal toxicity and ototoxicity are considered as the main side effects of aminoglycoside antibiotics, such as gentamicin. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of co-treatment by origanum vulgare extract on the gentamicin-induced renal toxicity. Methods: Adult male Wistar rats in the weight range of 200 to 250 grams were randomly assigned into four groups (n = 8): contro...
متن کاملA Case of Ocular Benign Lymphoid Hyperplasia Treated with Bevacizumab Injection
We report the first case of ocular benign lymphoid hyperplasia (BLH) treated with subconjunctival injection of bevacizumab (Avastin). A 27-year-old man presented to our clinic with conjunctival masses and limbal neovascularization. An incisional biopsy yielded the diagnosis of BLH. The patient was subsequently given a subconjunctival injection of bevacizumab (1.25 mg / 0.1 mL). The patient did ...

We report a case of subconjunctival worm with a rare presentation of diurnal photophobia and temporal conjunctival injection. This case report describes a subconjunctival dirofilariasis in a 59-year-old man presented with foreign body sensation, localized tenderness, and eye redness during the day. After removal of subconjunctival 10 cm worm, the diagnosis was compatible with Dirofilaria immiti...
